20 Questions Tuesday: 491 - Great? Expectations

October 6, 2026 Scott Ryan-Hart

It was the best of time, it was the worst of times… oh, crap, wrong Dickens

Anyhoozelbee

Expectations are a blessing and a curse.  When accurate, they are amazing, when they are a low bar and are surpassed, that is amazon as well… However, when that expectation is not met, since it is an expectation and not merely a goal, there is much rending of clothes, tearing of hair, and gnashing of teeth.

So, let’s defy expectations and get these 20 done before wednesday… |

Here we go.

1. When someone tells you they’ll be there at 7:00, what time do you actually expect them to arrive?

I am from the late 1900’s, so coordinating times with people is in my DNA, it seems.  My dad was a military man, so “on-time” is late. 8:20.

2. What is something you were told was amazing that absolutely failed to live up to expectations?

Coffee. It smells so good, but it is just bitter hot bean soup that is only consumed for caffeine… there are other caffeine delivery systems.

3. What completely exceeded your expectations?

My tattoos I got for personal reasons instead of because it would demonstrate something. My more recent ones are integrated into who I am. They are talismans (talismen?) indicating maintenance and change in a way that the rest does not.

4. Which bothers you more: expecting rain and getting sunshine, or expecting sunshine and getting rain?

Oh, the expecting sunshine and getting rain instead. That just makes one gloomy.

5. What movie, television series, book, game, album, etc. had you completely invested in and then spectacularly failed to stick the landing?

Even though I did not watch it… just hearing about Game of Thrones season 8 brings shudders to my soul… For me personally, do you remember that show Dinosaurs from the 90’s… that one ended sooo bleak.

6. What everyday thing do you expect to happen with remarkable precision? The bus. Your coffee maker. A dog appearing when cheese is unwrapped…etc.

This is an interesting question, because I don’t think there is anything in my life right now with remarkable, expected precision. It is the implied “remarkable” consistency and “precise” execution.  I have expected things that are not remarkably consistent, and I have things that are remarkably consistent, but impressively imprecise.

7. What did you expect to hate but ended up loving?

Grilled pineapple… I typically do not like fruity things, but damn…

8. How much does someone else telling you that something is “amazing” affect your expectations of it?

I weigh recommendations according to the recommender's demonstrated competence, and a bad recommendation can damage the relationship. EOL

9. When someone says, “We should get together sometime,” do you actually expect to get together sometime?

For most people, it is a social pleasantry, not a genuine offer. For some people it is a genuine intention to meet up, but life will invariably get in the way. For the few people for whom it is an offer made in good faith? Those are the real ones.

10. What do you expect people to know how to do that you are continually surprised to discover they cannot?

Read a map… but I was a cartographer, so that might be a significant bias.

11. Do you generally expect things to work out, expect things to go wrong, or try not to expect anything at all?

I genuinely do expect things to work out… the schedule of the things working out typically does not match my timeline.

12. What did you expect adulthood to be like that turned out to be hilariously incorrect?

I expected adults to know what they are doing… no one knows what they’re doing, especially adults.

13. What did you expect to have figured out by this point in your life that you very much have not?

How a microwave works. Something about polarity in water? I have advanced degrees!

14. What expectation did your parents, teachers, family, etc. have for you that you either fulfilled, rejected, or completely missed?

At one point my mom was expecting me to become a Methodist minister… she was wrong.

15. What do people expect from you now that you never actually agreed to?

Politeness…

16. What do you expect from the people you love—and have you ever realized one of those expectations wasn't particularly fair?

I expect them to reach out to me to let me know I am wanted and worthy of connection, but that is a 2 way street.  One cannot stand at the edge of a room and be grumpy that no one is pulling you in.

17. Are your expectations for yourself higher or lower than the expectations you have for other people?

Oh, higher… even though my imposters syndrome has imposters syndrome.

18. What expectation for your own life have you quietly let go of?

This is a good one. I think I have let go of my expectation to get significantly better at drawing. I will continually improve, just not by leaps and bounds.

19. What are you currently trying very hard not to get your hopes up about?

Honestly, a side project that I am trying to put together right now. This one now has some hope associated with it, and there is nothing more dangerous and has more expectations than something you are hoping for.

20. What do you expect happens next?

Same old shit, different day.
